The Question — 1980s
In the 1980s, the organic skincare movement was rising. "Natural." "Pure." "Organic." The promises were everywhere.
But something bothered me deeply.
Every organic skincare brand listed Aqua on its label — because INCI required it. The regulations said nothing about what kind of water it had to be. Nobody was talking about that distinction. Not on their websites, not in their marketing, not anywhere. The label couldn't tell the story. The brand could have. None of them did.
Tap water. Municipal water — chlorinated, fluoridated. Anything but pure. If the entire promise of organic skincare was purity, why was nobody purifying the water?
Because here's what I understood intuitively, even before the science had words for it: your skin is not a wall. It's a door. What you apply doesn't just sit on the surface — it absorbs, it travels. And if the base of your "organic" formula is unfiltered tap water, then every botanical, every precious extract, every carefully chosen active ingredient is being carried in on the back of something anything but pure.
That was the question nobody was asking. And I could not let it go.
The Discovery — Chiral Science
Then I discovered Chiral Science & Technology.
Before going further, I asked my Science Advisor, Dr. Watanabe, whether specializing in chiral skincare might be interpreted as a gimmick. What he told me changed everything — and elevated my entire understanding of what "organic" truly means.
Chiral science, he explained, is the branch of chemistry that had already quietly revolutionized medicine — born from one of history's most heartbreaking pharmaceutical tragedies: Thalidomide. Scientists discovered that mirror-image molecules — identical in composition but opposite in orientation — behave completely differently in the human body. One form heals. The other harms.
The lesson was further underscored by a documented catastrophe in the world of amino acids: in 1989, Showa Denko K.K., a major Japanese manufacturer, produced a contaminated batch of L-tryptophan — an amino acid supplement — that triggered a nationwide epidemic in the United States, killing at least 36 people and afflicting over 1,500. The cause was traced to molecular impurities introduced during manufacturing: a failure of precision at the molecular level with devastating human consequences.
The Nobel Prize followed the broader science. Medicine was transformed. Skincare had not yet caught up.
I saw both the opportunity — and the responsibility, especially for those with sensitive skin or compromised health.
The Revelation — "Organic" Is Not Enough
Here is what the organic skincare world was not saying: just because an ingredient is organic, pesticide-free, and plant-derived does not mean it is chirally correct.
Organic certification speaks to how a plant was grown. It says nothing about which molecular form of its active compounds ends up in your product. A natural, organic ingredient can still arrive as a racemic mixture — a 50/50 blend of both mirror-image forms. The "wrong" enantiomer may be inactive, counterproductive, or in some cases harmful. The body only recognizes one form. The other is, at best, wasted — at worst, working against you.
The mainstream beauty industry was comfortable with that 50/50 compromise. I was not.

The yin-yang symbol is the perfect depiction of chiral molecules: two mirror-image forms, curving around each other in flawless symmetry. The lock and the key, rendered in a single ancient symbol.
The Leaf and Ladybug have a symbiotic relationship: the ladybug keeps the leaf free of pests - eliminating the need for pesticides harmful to the environment and our health. We've placed the leaf and ladybug inside the Yin/Yang - an ancient and mystical symbol of Natural Harmony.
Dr. Watanabe's brilliance and generous validation carried this torch through its earliest, most critical years. Though he is no longer with us, his scientific imprint lives in every formulation, every trademark, every word of this story.
